Create > Consume

5/24/2024

As I was scrolling through my social media feeds for what felt like the hundredth time today, I couldn't help but think about all the content I consume on a daily basis. It's so easy to get caught up in the endless stream of articles, videos, and images, especially the short-lived, addictive kind that seems to be everywhere these days. YouTube significantly impacts my daily life. Sometimes, without realizing it, I can spend more than two hours exploring various videos and getting lost in the "YouTube rabbit hole."

I realized that while consuming content can be enjoyable and educational, it's important to remember that creating content is just as important for personal and professional growth. After all, it's through creating, doing and teaching that we truly learn and connect with others.

That is what pushed me to write this post. So, I'm challenging myself to spend more time creating and working on a shift towards creativity and problem solving. I'm not sure what form it will take yet, but I'm excited to see what happens in the coming weeks as I make this change.

Why is creating important?

Creating is a fundamental aspect of engineering and life has several benefits, including:

  • Problem-solving: Creating allows you to develop new and innovative solutions to complex problems.
  • Creativity: Creating encourages you to think outside the box and come up with unique solutions.
  • Collaboration: Creating fosters collaboration among us, enabling us to work together on complex projects.
  • Personal growth: Creating provides you with a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction, contributing to their personal growth and development.

How to Create More Than You Consume:

  1. Set aside dedicated time for content creation: Allocate specific hours or days each week to focus on creating content. Consistency is key.
  2. Choose a topic you're passionate about: Selecting a topic you genuinely care about will make the creation process more enjoyable and engaging.
  3. Select a format you're comfortable with: Consider different content formats like blog posts, videos, infographics, or podcasts. Pick one that resonates with you and your audience.
  4. Start small and scale gradually: Don't overwhelm yourself by trying to produce a lot at once. Start with smaller, achievable goals and increase your output over time.
  5. Consistency is key: Maintaining a regular content creation schedule is crucial. Consistency helps build an engaged audience and reinforces your brand's presence.

Conclusion

Creating more content than you consume is a great way to accelerate your personal and professional growth. By dedicating specific time slots for content creation, selecting topics that align with your passions, and gradually expanding your efforts, you can effectively contribute to various platforms. This proactive approach not only enhances your knowledge and expertise but also enables you to connect with others, share valuable insights, and make a positive impact on the world. Remember, consistency is key, and by embracing creativity and continuous learning will help you to achieve your goals.
